When Music Attacks! September and October 2014

I’m back from Iceland. I had amazing adventures and experienced stunningly beautiful landscapes. Everyone should go. http://instagram.com/p/ruYDyHIYzD/

Regular-ish WiFi access allowed me to keep an eye on show announcements and I am pleased to see that musical treats abound this fall. I even made a few ticket purchases from the Reykjavik hostel. Because there are so many shows I cannot write my usual effusive declarations of love and entreaties for you to to make your ears and heart happy but you know the drill: shows with a preceding ** means I’m 100% in and ^^ means I’m keen but waiting for a swing vote.

** Sa 9/13 Sylvan Esso @ The Howard Theater

Doors 6:30 / Show 8pm / $15 / http://thehowardtheatre.com/show/2014/09/13/sylvan-esso/

This show sold out the Rock N Roll Hotel and has subsequently been moved to Howard Theater. I just bought tickets. Join for a night of dancing and euphoria to remember.

Their self-titled debut album is in my top 3 albums of 2014. Here’s their entire performance at the 9:30 Club opening for Tune-Yards in July. I was at this show and it was amazing.

This song will win you over: Sylvan Esso – Hey Mami

And this song / video will have you wanting to dance with strangers at the show: Play It Right

F 9/16 Little Daylight @ DC 9

Doors 6:00pm / Shows 6:30pm / $10/ $12 / http://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/628639?utm_medium=bks

First, there are different kinds of sugar: sugars created in labs, sugars found in nature, sugars that combine the two. Little Daylight throws in its lot with naturally occurring fructose, capitalizing on what surrounds the sweetness. Hello Memory is synth-driven, youthful electro-pop, but there’s fiber in the pith. Nikki Taylor’s vocals are anthemic and fun, while her lyrics veer into darkness (“Overdose”) and are paired with mercurial instrumentation by Matt Lewkowicz and Eric Zeiler; their work helps swing the record from Toni Basil’s bubblegum (“My Life”) to Imogen Heap‘s ethereality (“Be Long”) to M83‘s ambient post-rock (“Nothing to Lose”).

W 9/17 GLASS ANIMALS @ Black Cat

Backstage / Doors at 8:00 / $13 Adv/ $15 DOS / http://www.blackcatdc.com/shows/glass-animals.html

^^F 9/19 YACHT with WHITE FANG @ Black Cat

Doors 9pm / $15 / http://www.blackcatdc.com/shows/yacht.html

“Yacht makes feel-good music for an era that could use a little happiness, a sweaty collection of heady, hedonistic tunes just in time for the hottest days of the year. And the best part is that one listen to any of their tunes will be able to transport you back to summer vacation any day of the year. Just try it.”

** Sa 9/20 How to Dress Well @U Street Music Hall

Doors 7pm / $15 / http://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/582493

The newest album is in my top 3 of 2014.  I saw HTDW a few months ago at the same venue and he unexpected played the entire new album. It rocked my face and feet, and that was never having heard the songs before. Imagine how awesome it will be in September? The answer you’re looking for is “not to be missed.”

I’ve already purchased tickets. Everyone should be at this show. Tom Krell is MAGIC. The new album is stellar and I have a HTDW well song on the last six playlists I’ve made – sometimes multiple songs per playlist.   https://soundcloud.com/howtodresswell

Shivers, shivers, so good >> How to Dress Well – Repeat Pleasure (Part 1 of 3 “What Is This Heart?” trilogy) (Official Video)

“& It Was U” creates so many FEELINGS and SENSATIONS.

** W 9/24 Lydia Loveless @ DC 9

Doors 8:30 / Show 9pm / $12 / http://www.dcnine.com/event/lydia-loveless/

Her music is everything country-rock sung by a story teller with a concise clear voice should be.  Simple song writing with slap-you-in-the-face feelings. The latest album has mediocre production value but I assure you the music is stellar. I’ve already bought my ticket. Do you have your’s?

Holy moley I love her. I listened to “Head” about five times a day for the entire month of June. I’m down to about once a week now. Holy bajesus.  Lydia Loveless Head. Also listen to “Really Wanna See You Again” Lydia Loveless “Really Wanna See You” : CIMU SESSIONS

She is amazing. She opened for the Old 97’s in May and just absolutely killed it. I can’t wait to see her headline.  Tiny Desk recorded June 1 after the 9:30 Club show.
