When Music Attacks! January + February
It’s time for the first “When Music Attacks!” forecast of 2015. There are things happening that everyone should know about.
Zola Jesus with Deradoorian
Th 1/29 @ Black Cat
Doors 8pm / $15 Adv, $17 DOS / Tickets
There was a time when goths were castigated. Made fun of. Alienated from mainstream society. These days everyone is into vampires, black, and chicks with too much eyeliner. Cue Zola Jesus. The latest queen of the dark scene. After a decade of opera study and a musical awakening involving such varied inspiration as Billboard bubblegum, classical arias, no wave, and industrial, she has developed a gloom-pop sound that will haunt you forever. This time around, goth is here to stay.
Tues 2/3 @ Rock N Roll Hotel
Doors 7 / Show 8 / $15 / Tickets
Damien is opening for Jason Isbell the following night, 2/4 at Lincoln Theater but the show is sold out and stub hub tickets are insanely high at $100+ each. I will try to box-office scalp on Wednesday night because I love Jason Isbell, but I can’t afford to fuck around and miss Damien Jurado again.
Jericho Road (Live)
NPR Tiny Desk Concert (Feb 2011)
DC Music Download’s 3 Year Anniversary Show || Paperhaus (Album release show), Loud Boyz, Baby Bry Bry & The Apologists, DJ AYESCOLD
Sa 2/5 @ 9:30 Club
Doors 7 / $16 / Tickets
So here’s the thing. YOU NEED TO GO TO THIS SHOW. I will be in Denver and thus missing out, much to the sadness of my heart, ears, and feet.
Baby Bry Bry & The Apologists is fronted by one of my favorite friends, Bryan Gerhart, who knows how to scribe a simple song with words you would say quietly to yourself or an ex-lover and then go out and dance-the-shit-out-of on a stage with all your best friends. This band puts on an enthralling show and their music will make you an instant fan.
Bandcamp for a listen to “I Learn To Drown Myself Out”
In addition to living rooms, U Street Music Hall, and Rock N Roll Hotel, they have also played at the Kennedy Center.

Paperhaus is both hand and DC-home-show-venue in northern Petworth. Even if you don’t love their music, love what they are doing for DC. Loud Boyz are one of DC’s most beloved punk bands. DJ Ayescold has been making the rounds at Velvet Lounge, 2B Studios, and DC billings these last few months. Give a listen on Sound Cloud.
Su 2/8 @ Rock N Roll Hotel
Doors 7 / Show 8 / $15/ Tickets
Fuck I love Lydia Loveless so much. She is direct, powerful, and enchanting in her lyrics, guitar playing, stage presence. She and the band are no-muss in their stage banter and song churn. I’ve seen her three times now and would be at this show if I weren’t in Denver. YOU NEED TO GO TO THIS.
Head (a song about head)
Tiny Desk recorded June 1 after her show at the 9:30 Club.
Really Wanna See You Again (CIMU Session)
The Dodos with Springtime Carnivore
Tu 2/24 @ Black Cat
Doors 8 / $15 / Tickets
Unique indie-folk sound best captured in 2008’s Visiter, the newest album Individ is accessible, thoughtful, dark, worth it. Early listen with Pitchfork.
Transformer (Live with orchestra)
‘Competition‘ is a straight ahead emotional shedding song. Meric Long can now add modern dance to his list of skills.
